Take the example of a humble tree.
It starts off as a tiny seed, soaking up nutrients from the earth and growing into a mighty giant that produces oxygen for us to breathe and provides shade and shelter for all sorts of critters. When autumn rolls around, its leaves fall and decompose, replenishing the soil with nutrients for the cycle to start all over again. No waste, no fuss – just a beautiful, natural process that’s been going on for millions of years.
As businesses, we could learn a thing or two from our leafy friends. We’ve got to start thinking about how we can extend the life cycle of the products we use, reduce our reliance on single-use items, and minimise waste wherever possible. For us now, it’s more about creating a circular economy, where we look for way to repair, reuse, or repurpose, before we try to or recycle it. As who knows if the plastics you put in the blue bins are being recycled or just being mixed in with general waste and going to landfill
It’s work in progress
Now, as a company we’re are far from perfect. But we’re trying our best to make changes where we can. Company vans have been switched to electric or for more fuel-efficient models, we have invested going paperless moving everything to digital. We have a companywide ban on single use plastics and in the coming month, are making a conscious effort to explore more chemical-free cleaning methods that are kinder to the environment.
Of course, the pandemic threw us a curveball with all the disinfecting and sanitising that had to be done. But even then, we tried our best to find solutions that were effective without causing harm to the planet. We switched from using bleaches and disinfectants to using Anti-microbial coatings to reduce chemical and labour times
Ditching the aerosol cans and single use plastics
Having ditched the aerosol cans and single-use plastics in favour of refillable pump sprays and microfibre cloths, mops and that can be washed and reused time and time again. We’re also taking a closer look at the detergents and cleaning products we use, searching for options that are still tough on grime but gentler on the environment.
And you know what? It’s not just about doing the right thing for the planet – it’s also about being smart with our money. Investing in high-quality, long-lasting equipment might cost a bit more upfront, but it pays off in the long run by reducing maintenance costs and minimising waste.
We found that we were able to reduce costs while reducing our carbon footprint during the pandemic so perhaps just a small silver lining: it showed us how much we can accomplish through virtual meetings and remote work. These days, we’re doing as much as we can online, from training sessions to client catch-ups, cutting down on unnecessary travel and carbon emissions.
At the end of the day, it’s all about making small steps but conscious choices to recycle, reuse, reduce, and eliminate waste wherever possible. It’s a journey, and we’re still learning as we go, but we’re committed to doing our very best to protect what we still have for the sake of others in the future.
